Westinghouse Unveils New Small Nuclear Reactor to Help Power a Greener Future

Westinghouse has just introduced a new kind of nuclear reactor, and it’s small, smart, and could play a big role in our clean energy future. Called the AP300, this compact nuclear reactor is designed to provide 300 megawatts of nearly emissions-free electricity—enough to power hundreds of thousands of homes.

Unlike some of the more experimental reactor designs out there, the AP300 keeps things simple. It’s a smaller version of Westinghouse’s already proven AP1000 reactor, which is currently in use in China and is being brought online in Georgia, USA.

Rita Baranwal, Westinghouse’s chief technology officer, said this approach gives them an edge. “We’ve kept it simple, designed it on demonstrated and licensed technology,” she said. That means fewer unknowns and faster approvals.

What Makes This Reactor Special?
It’s modular: That means it’s built in parts and assembled on-site, which can be faster and cheaper than traditional nuclear plants.

It doesn’t need special fuels or exotic coolants: Many next-gen reactors rely on new materials or fuel types. The AP300 doesn’t.

It’s passively safe: In case of an emergency, it can shut down and stay cool for up to 72 hours—without needing power or human intervention.

It's flexible: The reactor is small enough to replace old coal plants and could bring reliable electricity to remote areas, even in parts of sub-Saharan Africa.

When Will It Be Ready?
Westinghouse hopes to begin construction by 2030 and have the first AP300 running by 2033.

How Much Will It Cost?
The company hasn’t revealed the cost of the first unit yet, but it estimates future reactors will cost about $1 billion each—a competitive price compared to traditional large-scale nuclear plants.

Who’s Interested?
There’s already interest in the U.S., with Ohio and West Virginia looking into the possibility of using AP300s at former coal plant sites. Westinghouse is also eyeing international markets, including Eastern Europe and Africa. However, exporting the tech to China is still uncertain due to U.S. restrictions on newer nuclear technologies.

Why It Matters
As countries race to reduce carbon emissions, clean energy sources like nuclear power are becoming more important. Small modular reactors (SMRs) like the AP300 could be key to meeting climate goals while keeping the lights on.

Even with past concerns about safety and cost overruns, Baranwal says the demand is growing. “Countries want more energy independence,” she said—and Westinghouse believes the AP300 could be part of the solution.
